The Madrid city council has deployed an artificial intelligence security system in Puerta del Sol to assist law enforcement. Operational since 2024, this technology functions similarly to a video assistant referee by analyzing security footage frame by frame to identify potential criminal activity.

The system does not autonomously determine guilt. Instead, it labels specific visual elements within the footage to facilitate cross-referencing across multiple cameras. For instance, police can input descriptions, such as specific clothing colors, to automatically track individuals through the crowded plaza.

Madrid currently utilizes this automated technology in 120 of its 404 total security cameras. All installations must adhere to national data protection laws, which mandate that recordings be destroyed after one month unless they are required for an active investigation.

This surveillance infrastructure serves as a countermeasure to misinformation. While AI is sometimes used to generate fabricated videos of incidents in the area, the city's official camera network provides a factual basis for verifying whether reported events actually occurred.
