Speculation regarding a potential Half-Life 3 has intensified following a recent public appearance by Valve staff. During a GameSoundCon panel focused on audio engine development, composer and audio designer Mike Morasky referenced a project codenamed HLX while discussing high dynamic range audio implementations.

The mention occurred when Morasky compared HDR versions between projects, stating that Deadlock and HLX each utilize their own specific iterations. Following the remark, colleague David Feise was observed whispering to Morasky, noting that he had mentioned HLX only once, before steering the discussion back to technical topics.

While this marks the first public mention of the codename by a Valve employee, the term HLX has previously appeared in game files. Users such as Gabe Follower and Tyler McVycker have identified references to HLX within the code for Counter-Strike 2, Deadlock, and Half-Life: Alyx since early 2024.

Despite the community interest, Valve has not officially announced any project under the name HLX or a third Half-Life installment. Observers suggest the comment could potentially be a planned joke, and no further details regarding the nature of the project were provided during the conference.
