Sony Interactive Entertainment has filed a patent for a new technology titled Generation Super Sampling (GSS), as detailed in a document published on October 15, 2026, under reference US 2026/0320740 A1. This innovation aims to advance console display fluidity by utilizing artificial intelligence to generate images ahead of the processor's standard rendering cycle.

Unlike traditional methods that interpolate between two rendered frames, causing latency, Sony's GSS system uses a dual neural network approach. One network compresses a rendered image while a second network predicts and generates the subsequent frame in advance. This process is designed to eliminate the lag inherent in current frame generation solutions.

The system incorporates player input data from the controller to refine its predictions. By analyzing joystick movements and button presses, the AI anticipates camera direction and upcoming actions. According to Digital Foundry, the algorithm also performs real-time self-evaluation by comparing its predictions against actual rendered frames to improve future accuracy.

While this technology could theoretically enable 4K gaming at 120 FPS with advanced Ray Tracing on a future console like the PS6, Sony has not confirmed its final implementation. Mark Cerny previously noted that frame generation would arrive on Sony hardware after 2026, but the company has provided no specific metrics regarding visual quality or latency reduction. The patent does not guarantee the technology will appear in its current form.
