Nintendo representative director and fellow Shigeru Miyamoto has been named a recipient of Japan's 2026 Order of Culture. This marks the first time an individual from the digital entertainment and gaming sector has received this prestigious honor, which recognizes significant contributions to the nation's cultural development.
Miyamoto, who joined Nintendo in 1977, has been instrumental in creating iconic franchises including Donkey Kong, Super Mario Bros., and The Legend of Zelda. During a press conference, he emphasized that game development is a collaborative effort rather than a solitary achievement, stating he accepts the award on behalf of his entire team.
Reflecting on his career, Miyamoto noted that the core appeal of Super Mario lies in movement, exploration, and overcoming obstacles rather than strictly battling bosses. Regarding the rise of artificial intelligence, he suggested that the technology forces creators to re-evaluate the fundamental meaning of production and their own roles within the creative process.
The Order of Culture, established in 1937, has previously been awarded to figures in science, literature, and film. Miyamoto is scheduled to receive the medal from the Emperor at the Imperial Palace on November 3, further cementing the status of video games as a recognized cultural medium in modern society.
