Key information
The A Certain Magical Index franchise has expanded with the premiere of a new spinoff, A Certain Dark Matter Symbiosis. Unlike other entries, this series is written by Kazuma Kamachi and is set before the events of the original light novel's 15th volume, specifically preceding Hamazura Shiage joining the ITEM organization.
The narrative focuses on the ITEM squad, an elite group of girls operating within the dark side of Academy City. Led by Level 5 esper Mugino Shizuri, the team includes Takitsubo Rikou, Frenda, and the newly introduced Kinuhata Saiai and Hanano Chomi. They undertake various illicit missions, ranging from sabotage to assassination.
J.C.STAFF produces the series with director Nagai Tatsuyuki, a veteran of the franchise. Reviewers note that while action sequences remain a weakness, the animation quality, character designs, and storyboarding are visually impressive. The series successfully balances humor and character development, providing depth to the ITEM members' backgrounds, including their personal histories and motivations.
The original voice cast returns, featuring Koshimizu Ami, Suzaki Aya, Uchida Maaya, and Akasaki Chinatsu, alongside newcomer Hishikawa Hana. The series aims to flesh out details previously unexplored in the main story or other spinoffs. Fans of the franchise are encouraged to watch, as the production captures the familiar charm of the series.
