Nintendo Representative Director Fellow Shigeru Miyamoto has been awarded Japan's prestigious Order of Culture. During a press conference held at Nintendo's Kyoto headquarters on October 22, Miyamoto expressed his honor, emphasizing that this recognition represents the collective efforts of the many people he has worked with throughout his career rather than his individual achievements alone.
Reflecting on his 50-year career since joining Nintendo in 1977, Miyamoto discussed his development of foundational titles like Donkey Kong, Super Mario Bros., and The Legend of Zelda. He noted that the industry has evolved significantly, with gaming now recognized as a cultural medium that spans generations, moving beyond its origins as a niche hobby.
Miyamoto highlighted his design philosophy, which prioritizes user-friendly interactive experiences. He cited the development of the Wii controller as a response to the complexity that previously alienated non-gamers. Regarding modern technology, he expressed that while generative AI can assist with repetitive tasks, the core of game design remains the creator's intent and the ability to provide meaningful, interactive responses to players.
Looking forward, Miyamoto intends to continue exploring new creative avenues, including film production and theme park expansions, to share Nintendo's characters with broader audiences. He remains committed to fostering original, interactive experiences that resonate globally, maintaining his focus on creating intuitive, engaging content that feels like a natural part of daily life.
