Key information

Since her 1996 debut, Lara Croft has evolved from a low-polygon model to a highly detailed adventurer. Crystal Dynamics is now leveraging modern technology to reinterpret the character for the upcoming Tomb Raider: The Atlantis Artifact, aiming to balance hyper-realism with the iconic silhouette players recognize from the original PlayStation era.

Technical advancements allow for unprecedented detail. Brendon Bengston explains that developers now use hair cards to simulate realistic strands rather than solid shapes. Furthermore, the team utilizes blend shapes for facial expressions and subsurface scattering to make skin appear lifelike. To ensure authentic clothing, designers scanned real garments created by a tailor, capturing the unique textures of materials like denim and silk.

Despite these visual upgrades, narrative director John Stafford emphasizes that the character's core essence remains unchanged. The team aims to preserve Lara's intelligence, curiosity, and adventurous spirit while deepening her emotional complexity. Drawing from the Survivor trilogy and previous titles, the developers strive to evoke the same sense of wonder players felt in earlier games.

Lara Croft’s latest journey is scheduled to launch on February 13, 2027, for PlayStation 5. Pre-orders are currently available via the PlayStation Store.
