Key information

Electronic Arts has officially shuttered BioWare, resulting in the cancellation of its upcoming Mass Effect title and the elimination of 400 positions. This decision follows the company's 2007 acquisition of the studio.

Former BioWare executive producer Mark Darrah suggests that EA's current cost-control strategy could lead to the sale of dormant franchises like Mass Effect, Dragon Age, and Jade Empire. Because these properties are no longer in active development, EA might seek to generate revenue by offloading them.

However, industry analyst John Buckley cautions that selling intellectual property is complex. He notes that rights holders frequently lack interest in selling, or they demand prohibitively high prices, which could complicate any potential divestment of significant series like Mass Effect.

While Darrah notes that fans must wait to see if EA pursues these sales, he also acknowledges the possibility that the publisher might simply choose to archive these franchises indefinitely. The closure of the studio was previously anticipated following EA's acquisition by the PIF group.
