Ken Kutaragi, the creator of the original PlayStation, recently suggested that the era of dedicated gaming consoles might be nearing its conclusion. In a discussion with The Game Business, he highlighted the potential for artificial intelligence to eliminate the necessity for physical hardware within players' homes.

Kutaragi expressed concerns regarding the current state of the industry, specifically pointing to the rising costs of modern gaming machines. He argued that the increasing prices for both consoles and computers create an unhealthy environment for the broader market.

The shift is driven by the nature of artificial intelligence, which operates on the server side rather than the user's local edge equipment. As these network-based technologies evolve, Kutaragi believes users may no longer need to purchase consoles to access next-generation gaming experiences.

Kutaragi, who retired from the PlayStation division nearly 20 years ago, currently serves as the CEO of Cyber AI Entertainment. He emphasized that these perspectives represent his personal opinions and do not reflect official plans from Sony.
