A developer has successfully ported a custom guitar application, FretCaster, and three automated music engines to the M5Stack Tab5, a 5-inch RISC-V tablet released in 2025. The project aims to create a portable, dedicated instrument capable of live performance and demonstration.
The Tab5 features an ESP32-P4 dual-core processor running at 400MHz. Because the device lacks Linux or Android support, the developer utilized the Arduino IDE and ESP-IDF to write C++ code. Key technical adjustments included replacing double-precision calculations with single-precision sine tables to accommodate the hardware's FPU and utilizing the built-in 2D accelerator for efficient screen rendering.
The developer encountered several challenges, including audio dropouts caused by inefficient floating-point math and thermal protection triggers on the 1W amplifier. By implementing a governor to manage output levels and optimizing signal processing, the developer achieved stable performance. Additionally, the integration of a 6-axis IMU allows for expressive features like vibrato and position shifting, mirroring functionality found in the original iPad version.
While the Tab5 is currently functional for demos, the developer notes that the 5-inch screen limits fret spacing. Future iterations may explore larger 10.1-inch RISC-V boards to improve playability. For now, the device serves as a compact, standalone music station for the developer's upcoming band performance.
