Avi Lewis, a leader within Canada's New Democratic Party, has publicly criticized Electronic Arts following the closure of the Edmonton-based studio BioWare. Lewis characterized the shutdown as a consequence of private equity practices, which he claims prioritize short-term profit over the stability of established businesses.
In a social media statement, Lewis argued that the studio's developers possess the necessary expertise to manage operations and continue game production. He proposed that the Canadian federal government should provide the support required for these employees to purchase the studio and transition it into an independent entity.
Lewis, who has previously advocated for the nationalization of various industries, suggested that such measures are essential to prevent international interests from dismantling Canadian companies. His comments reflect a broader political stance against the influence of private equity firms on the domestic economy.
While the future of the studio remains uncertain, reports indicate that the Amazon series based on Mass Effect is expected to continue despite the closure. Former staff members, including Casey Hudson and David Gaider, have expressed gratitude for their time at the studio and praised its historical impact on the gaming industry.
