Electronic Arts has officially announced the development of a new initiative titled Project Gridiron. Chief studios officer Cam Weber and chief operating officer David Tinson introduced the project in a company memo following recent staff layoffs and the closure of BioWare.

The company describes this upcoming title as a social-first open-world experience tailored for its American football teams. This direction suggests a shift toward integrating virtual social spaces similar to the City mode found in the NBA 2K series.

GameSpot contributor Michael Higham notes that such a mode requires significant community goodwill, an authentic voice, and patience, qualities he argues the EA Sports brand has historically lacked. He suggests the project faces challenges in meeting these cultural demands.

The proposed format would likely feature social hubs for pick-up games, tournaments, and avatar customization. However, Higham warns that these environments are often heavily monetized, citing NBA 2K's model which includes extensive in-game shops for branded apparel, accessories, and fantasy items.
