Speculation regarding a potential new Half-Life title has resurfaced following a public comment by Valve audio artist Mike Morasky. During a GameSoundCon panel on October 22, 2026, Morasky referenced "HLX" while discussing audio engine variables, specifically noting that the project utilizes its own version of Valve's HDR system.
The term HLX first appeared in early 2024 within Counter-Strike 2 data strings, bearing similarities to the codename used for Half-Life: Alyx. While previous rumors failed to materialize into an official announcement, the recent panel interaction suggests the codename remains active within the company.
Following the mention, co-panelist David Feise reacted by whispering to Morasky, appearing to acknowledge the sensitivity of the disclosure. Feise later remarked at the end of the session, "Good job, you only said HLX once," further highlighting the significance of the slip. Morasky had previously nearly uttered the same term in 2025 before correcting himself to "Alyx."
Despite these developments, the exact nature of HLX remains unconfirmed. Observers suggest it could represent a new Half-Life game, internal technology, or potentially a playful interaction by Valve staff. While editor Tyler Wilde previously expressed belief that a new entry in the series might be announced, no official confirmation exists.
