Key information
Grand Theft Auto 6 has reached over 6.45 million digital preorders, generating more than $630 million in revenue according to Sensor Tower. Data indicates a significant commercial lead for Sony, with 74% of these preorders placed on PS5 compared to 26% on Xbox Series X|S.
Microsoft aims to counter this market dominance by integrating AMD's FSR 4.1 technology into its consoles. This machine-learning upscaling tool allows games to render at lower resolutions before reconstructing them into 4K, potentially freeing up GPU resources for improved frame rates or ray tracing.
Scott Van Vliet, Xbox's Chief Technology Officer, confirmed that the company collaborated with AMD to bring this feature to Xbox Series X and S consoles. He noted that this provides developers with a powerful tool to enhance performance and visual quality.
While the standard PS5 utilizes Sony's QSSR solution, the introduction of FSR 4.1 on Xbox Series X could theoretically balance the technical playing field. Despite the current preorder disparity, these advancements may lead to unexpected results in future performance and visual comparisons between the platforms.
