Electronic Arts has officially announced the closure of BioWare, leading to the cancellation of the next entry in the Mass Effect series. Although the project was announced several years ago, no concrete details or visuals were previously shared with the public.
Following the studio's closure, a trailer for the project, potentially titled Mass Effect: Universe, surfaced online. Sources cited by Jason Schreier and IGN confirm the footage is authentic, having been produced by BioWare as a conceptual sample of their vision for the title.
The video was developed during the pre-production phase to demonstrate the intended tone of the game to Electronic Arts. Despite these efforts, the presentation did not prevent the studio's shutdown or the subsequent cancellation of the project.
The future of the franchise remains uncertain following these events. Former BioWare staff have suggested that Electronic Arts might choose to sell the Mass Effect and Dragon Age intellectual properties or potentially abandon them entirely.
