The gaming industry faces a major strategic divide as Sony plans to cease physical game production by January 2028 to maximize margins and control distribution. Conversely, Microsoft and Nintendo are reinforcing their commitment to physical media, positioning themselves as alternatives for players who value ownership and collection.
Microsoft is actively strengthening its physical logistics. In October 2026, the company sought a Games Supply Strategist to coordinate global physical releases. Additionally, Microsoft tested a 'Disc to Digital' initiative in August 2026, allowing users to convert physical games into digital licenses while retaining the physical case, reflecting CEO Asha Sharma’s stated goal of offering consumer choice.
Nintendo maintains its support for physical formats, though its approach involves nuance. While Nintendo rejects abandoning physical media, its upcoming Switch 2 'Game-Key Card' will require mandatory downloads. Industry figures, including Bloober Team CEO Piotr Babieno and Broken Mirror executive Tymon Smektala, emphasize the tactile importance of physical games, arguing that digital-only models ignore the cultural and collection-based value players place on physical objects.
Despite high digital sales percentages—82% for PlayStation and 61.5% for Nintendo—Sony’s move toward a fully digital ecosystem risks alienating its community. By contrast, the flexibility offered by Xbox and Nintendo could become a significant competitive advantage, potentially framing Sony’s future platforms as restrictive compared to rivals that preserve the physical market.
