Sony is actively planning the PlayStation 6, though a specific release date remains unconfirmed. While previous cycles suggested a 2027 launch, memory shortages and economic factors have shifted expectations toward 2028 or 2029. Industry analysts, including Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier, have cautioned that a 2027 release could prove disastrous given current market conditions.
The console is expected to carry a high price tag, potentially exceeding $1,000. Reports indicate that RAM and NAND memory costs alone surpass $680 due to the AI data center boom. Although the bill of materials is projected to be roughly $200 cheaper than the upcoming Xbox, Sony is reportedly exploring new business models to address these rising production costs.
Technically, the PS6 will likely utilize AMD’s Zen 6 processors and RDNA 5 graphics architecture. This x86-based design is expected to facilitate backward compatibility with PS4 and PS5 libraries. Regarding physical media, Sony’s decision to cease disc production by January 2028 suggests the console will be digital-only, though an external disc drive module remains a possibility.
While specific software remains unconfirmed, titles like Marvel’s X-Men are anticipated for the platform. Sony has also filed patents for modular controllers featuring haptic interfaces, though these remain experimental. Additionally, reports suggest Sony is developing a handheld device sharing similar Zen 6 and RDNA 5 architecture to compete in the portable market.
