Onimusha: Way of the Sword has garnered praise for its fluid combat animations and natural sword-swinging mechanics. Director Satoru Nihei noted that the team prioritized these details six years ago to emphasize the power and excitement of the game's action.
The development team leveraged Capcom's existing assets and motion capture data, relying on programmers to implement physics-based calculations. These allow for smooth transitions between animations, a process the team refined throughout the title's lengthy development cycle.
A key technical addition is the dynamic dismemberment system, which allows enemies to be sliced along the exact path of a sword strike. Unlike other titles where enemies might freeze during such animations, Nihei explained that the team updated the RE Engine to ensure foes remain animated while dying and falling apart, enhancing the impact of finishers like the Issen strike.
While the team opted against the freeform cutting found in games like Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance to maintain the desired tempo, the new dismemberment tech is now part of the RE Engine. This implementation suggests potential for similar reactive gore effects in future Capcom releases.
