A trailer for a canceled Mass Effect title, reportedly titled Mass Effect: Universe, has surfaced online following the closure of BioWare by EA. The two-minute cinematic clip was shared on Reddit on October 22. Journalist Jason Schreier has verified the authenticity of the footage, confirming it represents the project BioWare was developing prior to the studio's shutdown.
The leaked footage features a new human protagonist interacting with an Asari character, identified as Liara T'Soni, during a tense bar scene. The video also showcases brief combat sequences involving a Krogan before concluding with the game's official logo.
Discrepancies exist regarding the development status of the project. While an internal EA memo characterized the game as being in early development, an anonymous Reddit user claiming to be an employee suggested the project was more advanced. The game was initially teased by BioWare in 2020, though EA has yet to issue an official statement regarding the leak.
The cancellation of this project is linked to broader workforce reductions, with approximately 50 of the 400 total job cuts at EA attributed to the Mass Effect team. It is anticipated that EA may issue takedown requests for the leaked material in the near future.
