Electronic Arts announced a major restructuring on October 21, which includes the closure of BioWare and its Edmonton facilities. This decision halts early development on the next Mass Effect title, marking the end of the legendary studio that helped define the RPG genre.

Mark Darrah, who served as BioWare's executive producer from 1997 to 2021, noted that EA retains full ownership of intellectual properties like Dragon Age, Mass Effect, and Jade Empire. He stated that the current situation does not inherently change the status of these assets.

Darrah suggested that while EA might simply shelve these franchises indefinitely, the closure could increase the likelihood of the company selling them. He believes the firm is currently focused on cost control, but may prioritize revenue generation in the future, making asset sales a more attractive option.

The company was acquired by a private investment consortium in August for $55 billion. With the group facing significant debt, fans and developers remain concerned about the future of these IPs, including whether a new Mass Effect game will ever be produced.
