Key information
The DroidDeck project for Android allows users to run the Steam client directly on mobile devices, providing access to personal game libraries without relying on cloud streaming or a host PC. By utilizing the ARM version of Steam and the Big Picture interface, the application aims to replicate the experience found on the Steam Deck.
To achieve this functionality, the software integrates Proton, a compatibility layer for running Windows titles on Linux, alongside FEX, which translates x86 processor instructions for ARM-based mobile hardware. This technical approach mirrors concepts explored in Valve's Steam Frame project.
Performance testing by content creator ETA PRIME on a Redmagic 11 Pro with a Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 and 16 GB of RAM showed promising results at 720p. Titles like Cyberpunk 2077 and Skyrim Special Edition maintained approximately 60 fps on medium settings, while Left 4 Dead 2 reached 120 fps on high. Hogwarts Legacy achieved 48 fps, increasing beyond 60 fps with FSR frame generation.
Despite these results, the project faces significant hurdles. It requires Android 9 or higher and at least an Adreno 730 GPU, excluding many devices. Furthermore, local execution causes substantial hardware heating and necessitates complex configuration adjustments, making it less accessible than standard mobile applications.
