Gamepires, the developer behind the open-world survival title Scum, has announced a reduction in its workforce. The studio stated via an unattributed message on X that the decision was necessary to adapt to challenging market conditions and ensure long-term sustainability for the company.

The layoffs occur only eight months after Gamepires was acquired by the Splash Damage Group, a deal supported by Emona Capital. At the time of the acquisition, Splash Damage claimed that integrating the teams around Scum would provide stability and help protect roles within the studio.

The acquisition of Gamepires took place just three months after Splash Damage conducted its own significant layoffs. Splash Damage previously cited the need to remain agile in a difficult market as the reason for those earlier staff cuts, which followed the company's own acquisition by private equity investors.

Gamepires has not disclosed the specific number of employees affected by these latest cuts. While Splash Damage has not released a new game since 2020, Scum continues to receive regular content updates and hotfixes on Steam.
