Security researcher Sammy Hajhamid, known online as pepsipu, has introduced ns2jb, a software-only jailbreak compatible with the Nintendo Switch 2 running firmware version 23.0.1. The researcher demonstrated the exploit by modifying the exclusive title Mario Kart World to include custom characters such as Peter Griffin and Hatsune Miku.
The development process utilized OpenAI's Codex to automate testing. By connecting the consoles to JetKVMs and a hardware-based power button trigger, the AI agents were able to iterate independently. The exploit chain initiates via a 32-bit integer overflow within SmileBASIC 4, followed by a buffer overflow in the filesystem service of the console.
This jailbreak allows for the execution of native code with system module permissions, facilitating homebrew, save backups, and game modifications. Researcher Gezine, who previously disclosed a userland exploit in July, characterized the work as legitimate. However, the jailbreak is currently tethered, requiring re-execution after every reboot, and lacks custom firmware or kernel-level access.
Nintendo has not issued an official statement regarding the exploit. Given the company's history of addressing piracy and emulation, observers anticipate a potential firmware patch or the possible removal of SmileBASIC 4 from the eShop.
