Electronic Arts has announced the closure of BioWare, the studio behind the Mass Effect and Dragon Age franchises. This decision is part of a broader company-wide restructuring effort that will lead to the termination of approximately 400 employees. The publisher has also confirmed it will not pursue development on a new Mass Effect title.
Former BioWare executive producer Mark Darrah noted that EA maintains full ownership of the studio's intellectual properties, including Dragon Age, Mass Effect, and Jade Empire. Given that no internal teams are currently assigned to these projects, Darrah suggested that EA might consider selling these assets to help address its $55 billion debt.
While Darrah speculated that the publisher could eventually shift toward revenue-generation strategies involving IP sales, he cautioned that EA is currently focused on cost-control. Alternatively, the company might choose to keep the franchises dormant in its vault. Former lead writer David Gaider previously expressed his belief that the Dragon Age series was finished following the underwhelming commercial performance of Dragon Age: The Veilguard.
Despite the lack of internal development, EA retains the option to outsource future projects to external studios, similar to how Konami has managed the revival of the Silent Hill series. It remains unclear if or when the publisher will decide to divest its dormant properties or seek new partners for these established brands.
