Following the recent closure of BioWare and the cancellation of their next Mass Effect title, an internal trailer for the project has surfaced. This development follows EA's transition to a private company after a $55 billion acquisition by the Public Investment Fund, Silver Lake, and Affinity.
IGN has reportedly verified the authenticity of the footage, which was initially shared on Reddit. The video features pre-production assets and depicts a protagonist transitioning from military service to an interplanetary lifestyle. Gameplay snippets showcase traditional gunplay combined with telekinetic abilities, while the title Mass Effect Universe appears at the end.
The trailer includes an appearance by an older Liara T'Soni during a bar fight sequence. According to a former developer, the project aimed to provide a level of player autonomy and choice comparable to top-tier RPGs from studios like Larian and CD Projekt.
The cancellation is part of broader cost-cutting measures at EA, which resulted in 400 layoffs affecting teams working on The Sims, Skate, and Battlefield. EA stated the closure of BioWare is intended to align investments with long-term growth opportunities.
