Released in October 2001, Grand Theft Auto III marked a pivotal shift in gaming history. Developed by DMA Design, the title transitioned the franchise from 2D to 3D, establishing the modern open-world sandbox standard. By utilizing the RenderWare engine, the studio created an immersive metropolis inspired by 1990s cinema, moving away from the series' previous top-down perspective.

To overcome the PlayStation 2's 32 MB RAM limitation, developers employed clever engineering. They complexified urban layouts and increased air resistance by 5% to slow vehicles, masking the slow data streaming from the DVD-ROM. This allowed the game to maintain a dense city feel despite hardware constraints that restricted the console to loading only eight vehicle models simultaneously.

The game introduced foundational mechanics including a dynamic GPS, a six-level police wanted system, and non-linear gameplay. Players could ignore main missions to engage in side activities like taxi driving. While the title faced moral panics regarding violence and misogyny, it became the best-selling game of 2001 in the United States, selling over 14 million copies.

Following the September 11, 2001 attacks, Rockstar modified approximately 1% of the game, including police car colors and mission dialogue, delaying the release until October 22, 2001. Despite the 2021 Definitive Edition's technical issues, the original remains a foundational influence on the industry, having defined the "GTA-like" genre for decades.
