Electronic Arts has officially closed BioWare, the renowned developer behind iconic franchises including Mass Effect, Dragon Age, and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. This closure, which includes the cancellation of the next Mass Effect project, involves the layoff of approximately 400 employees as EA seeks to align its talent and investment following a private equity buyout.

Former BioWare general manager and project director Casey Hudson expressed his sorrow regarding the news on October 21, 2026. Hudson, who directed the Mass Effect trilogy and Knights of the Old Republic, stated he remains grateful for his career beginnings at the studio. He emphasized that BioWare's legacy will persist through the developers who continue to prioritize narrative-driven experiences.

Industry figures have shared varied reactions to the shuttering. Larian CEO Swen Vincke credited BioWare for popularizing the RPG genre, while CD Projekt joint CEO Michał Nowakowski noted the studio provided essential support during the creation of The Witcher 1. Conversely, developer Warren Spector described the closure as "utter bullshit."

Hudson continues to apply his experience at his new company, Arcanaut Studios, founded in 2025. Alongside a team of former BioWare staff, he is currently developing Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic, a narrative-driven action RPG described as a spiritual successor to his previous work on Knights of the Old Republic.
