Beyond Good & Evil 2, officially announced by Ubisoft in 2008, continues to face significant development hurdles. According to a report by Origami, the project remains in the pre-production phase despite 18 years having passed since its initial reveal, raising concerns about its ultimate viability.
The development process has been marked by constant shifts in core mechanics and scope. Between 2019 and 2022, the team explored concepts ranging from a Destiny-style multiplayer space adventure to a four-player group experience, eventually settling on a single-player focus with potential two-player cooperative support. However, these plans remain unfinalized.
Gameplay direction has similarly lacked consistency. Proposals have fluctuated between a space-based take on The Legend of Zelda and a structure inspired by Insomniac Games' Spider-Man titles. This lack of a clear vision has frequently placed the future of the sequel in jeopardy.
Despite these challenges, Ubisoft has not canceled the project. Over 250 staff members are currently involved in the development, with the company aiming to eventually achieve a more stable production path, though the long-term outlook for the game's release remains uncertain.
