Key information
FINAL FANTASY RESONANCE is now available on Xbox Series X|S and PC, supporting Xbox Play Anywhere. Developed by Square Enix and LANCARSE, the game reimagines the story of the former mobile title FINAL FANTASY BRAVE EXVIUS as a fully featured, single-player console experience.
The title marks the first time Square Enix has applied its HD-2D visual style to the flagship franchise. This aesthetic combines 2D pixel art with 3D environments, dynamic lighting, and cinematic cameras. The narrative returns to the series' roots, focusing on a party of heroes protecting elemental Crystals from a mysterious threat.
Combat is fully turn-based, utilizing a timeline to display action order. A key mechanic involves a stagger meter; depleting it stuns enemies and grants bonus actions. Players can also equip "Visions"—echoes of past series characters—to gain unique abilities and perform special Resonance attacks. This system allows for deep party customization, which the author found rewarding to adjust based on dungeon requirements.
The author praises the game for respecting player time through modernizations like fast travel, skippable cutscenes, and variable combat speeds. While the game features nostalgic fan service, it avoids the monetization of its mobile predecessor. A free demo of the first chapter is available, with progress carrying over to the full purchase.
