Thirty years after Lara Croft first appeared on screens in 1996, Crystal Dynamics is reinventing the adventurer for the PlayStation 5 in Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis. The development team aims to create the most realistic version of the character possible while ensuring she remains immediately recognizable as the original icon.
Technological advancements allow for unprecedented detail. Brendon Bengston of Crystal Dynamics notes that while early games relied on rigid polygon blocks, modern development uses hair cards to simulate individual strands. Furthermore, the team employs subsurface scattering and flow maps to give skin a natural appearance, alongside custom blend shapes to animate complex facial expressions.
To achieve realistic clothing, the team utilized a 3D scanning process. They sculpted a base model, created a life-sized 3D print, and dressed a mannequin in real garments tailored for the character. This method allows the digital model to accurately replicate the distinct physical behaviors of fabrics like silk, denim, and wool.
Narrative director John Stafford explains that the project synthesizes thirty years of history. While Lara’s core traits of intelligence and courage remain, the team has deepened her emotional range. The game is scheduled for release on February 12, 2027, and is currently available for pre-order on the PlayStation Store.
