Key information
Following the closure of BioWare by Electronic Arts, former executive Mark Darrah has addressed the uncertain future of major intellectual properties including Mass Effect, Dragon Age, and Jade Empire. Darrah noted that because these franchises currently lack active development teams, their long-term status remains unclear.
Darrah suggested that Electronic Arts holds the rights to these series and could potentially sell the licenses to other companies. However, he warned that a worse outcome might involve the publisher simply shelving these historic brands indefinitely, choosing neither to sell them nor to produce new entries.
According to Darrah, any strategic shift regarding these properties will likely be delayed. Electronic Arts is currently prioritizing cost control measures, and he believes a sale would only be considered if the company decides to pivot its strategy to generate new revenue streams.
At present, the publisher is focused on other major projects, such as Marvel's Iron Man and the upcoming Star Wars Jedi 3, which is targeted for 2027. Rumors also persist regarding a potential Star Wars Battlefront 3 in development at DICE and Respawn.
