RGG Studio, the team behind the Like a Dragon franchise, has announced Stranger than Heaven. The game follows the 50-year journey of protagonist Makoto Daito, blending brutal physical combat with the glamour of the show-business industry. Players navigate various historical settings, including 1915 San Francisco and Kokura, 1929 Kure, and 1943 Minami, Osaka.
The combat system utilizes a unique control scheme where L1 and R1 buttons, along with triggers, independently manage the left and right sides of Daito’s body. This allows for visceral, synchronized exchanges. Players can choose between fast one-handed weapons or heavy two-handed tools like jackhammers, which offer higher damage at the cost of vulnerability. Additionally, Daito’s physical and mental stats improve through daily activities, while weapon mastery and new techniques are earned via side stories and mini-games.
The show-business mechanics involve managing concerts, including promotion, song composition, and stage production. Players collect "Inspirations" from city sounds or combat to create music, which can be rearranged to alter the tone. Success in concerts depends on strategic preparation—such as selecting artists and stage effects—rather than just rhythm-based reflexes. The reviewer noted that the depth of these musical systems and the strategic preparation required make the gameplay loop feel highly promising.
Stranger than Heaven is scheduled for release on PlayStation 5 on Friday, January 15, 2027.
