Xbox has reportedly informed employees residing within 50 commuting miles of Microsoft's Washington base that they must work from the office at least four days per week. This new policy is scheduled to take effect on February 1, 2027.
According to an internal memo from chief people officer Jacinda Chislum Pearson, the company believes that in-person collaboration simplifies work reviews, issue resolution, and decision-making processes by reducing the need for additional scheduled meetings.
The mandate applies specifically to staff in the Puget Sound area. While existing in-office practices at other Xbox-owned studios are expected to remain unchanged, employees who previously secured exemptions from earlier return-to-office rules must now resubmit their requests for approval.
This shift follows a previous requirement for three days of in-office work introduced last year. The update occurs alongside ongoing company efforts involving multi-round layoffs, which aim to reduce the workforce by 3200 positions.
