The Video Game History Foundation (VGHF) has launched the Colin Williamson Photography Collection, an online archive featuring over 300 photographs documenting Japanese gaming culture from the late 1990s to the 2000s. These images, captured by American journalist Colin Williamson between 1999 and 2005, are now available for free public viewing through the VGHF Digital Archive.
The collection provides a visual record of major industry events, including the Tokyo Game Show and the Amusement Machine Show. Notable highlights include images from the 1999 and 2000 Tokyo Game Show, such as the Shenmue exhibit, and documentation of Nintendo Space World 2000, where hardware like the Game Boy Advance was unveiled.
Beyond trade shows, the archive captures the atmosphere of Akihabara, showcasing local game shops and arcades. The photos reveal period-specific details, such as promotional posters and displays for titles like Final Fantasy IX and Jet Set Radio, offering a glimpse into the retail environment of that era.
The VGHF permits the use of these materials for research and educational purposes, provided that proper credit is given to both Colin Williamson and the VGHF. No special qualifications or institutional affiliations are required to access the digital library, which serves as a resource for researchers and fans interested in gaming history.
