Electronic Arts has officially shuttered BioWare, resulting in the cancellation of the next Mass Effect title. The news follows the studio's recent history, including the release of Dragon Age: The Veilguard.
Science fiction author Derek Künsken, known for winning the 2012 Asimov Reader's Award and a 2021 Aurora Award, revealed he had been working on the project. Künsken served as both a contract writer and a senior staff writer for the game over the last five years.
Künsken expressed disappointment regarding the cancellation, noting that the team was developing a project he described as really cool. He highlighted his collaboration with Parrish Ley and Mary DeMarle as significant career highlights, praising the BioWare staff for their expertise and imaginative ambition.
While the project's potential remains unproven, reports previously suggested the game aimed to offer a level of autonomy and choice unmatched by other titles. Despite the studio's closure, an Amazon series based on the Mass Effect franchise is reportedly still moving forward.
