The Atari VCS platform is scheduled to retire early next year, concluding a decade-long journey marked by numerous delays and crowdfunding challenges. According to an announcement shared on the Atari Club Discord, the console's dedicated software store will officially close on February 1st, 2027.
The device functions as a Linux-based, AMD-powered mini PC designed with aesthetics inspired by the original Atari 2600. While it originally focused on emulating classic titles, the system expanded its utility over time by providing access to various streaming services, including Xbox Cloud Gaming and Nvidia GeForce Now.
Users retain the ability to download and add software to their libraries until January 31st, 2027. Following the store's closure, Atari intends to release an operating system update that migrates functionality to the local machine, eliminating reliance on company infrastructure for authentication. Additionally, a new Atari Home Brew app will enable the community to continue adding third-party games to the console.
Although the software store will no longer be operational after the specified date, Atari confirmed that games and applications already downloaded by owners will remain accessible for use.
