The games industry is mourning the sudden closure of BioWare, a studio widely recognized as one of the most influential RPG developers in history. Industry figures, including former staff and peers from other studios, have expressed deep sadness over the loss of the legendary developer and the impact on its employees.
Former BioWare leaders and developers, such as David Gaider, James Ohlen, and Casey Hudson, shared tributes reflecting on their careers and the studio's legacy. Michael Gamble, who served as project director on the now-cancelled Mass Effect 5, also acknowledged his 17-year tenure at the company following the layoffs.
Prominent figures like Warren Spector criticized the decision, labeling the closure a travesty and questioning the accountability of those in corporate roles. Spector argued that the individuals responsible for the decision should face consequences, noting that it is consistently the creators who suffer during such industry shifts.
The closure is part of a broader restructuring at EA, which recently underwent a $55bn acquisition by a consortium including Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund. EA confirmed 400 total job cuts, impacting additional studios such as Respawn, Maxis, Full Circle, EA Motive, and Ripple Effect.
