Thirty years after Lara Croft first appeared on screen, Crystal Dynamics is reimagining the iconic adventurer in Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis. While the original 1996 design was limited by early polygon counts, the development team aims to maintain the character's recognizable silhouette while utilizing modern technology to enhance realism on PlayStation 5.
To achieve this, developers are employing advanced techniques like subsurface scattering and flow maps to make Lara’s skin appear lifelike rather than plastic. Brendon Bengston of Crystal Dynamics notes that custom blend shapes now allow for thousands of natural facial expressions, including wrinkles that appear when she smiles or frowns, a level of detail previously impossible.
The team also utilized a physical scanning pipeline to ensure clothing authenticity. By sculpting a base body, 3D printing it, and dressing a mannequin in real-world fabrics like denim and silk, they created digital counterparts that react realistically. Additionally, hair is now rendered as precise, layered strands rather than the solid, helmet-like shapes of the past.
Narrative Director John Stafford emphasizes that while the technology has evolved, Lara’s core identity remains intact. The game synthesizes thirty years of history, blending the character's intelligence and fearlessness with the emotional depth and resilience established in the Survivor Trilogy. Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis launches February 12, 2027, with pre-orders currently available on the PlayStation Store.
