In 2026, Electronic Arts officially closed BioWare, marking the end of a 30-year history for the veteran studio. This decision also resulted in the cancellation of the next Mass Effect title, six years after its initial announcement. The closure follows a broader corporate restructuring that includes 400 layoffs across the company.

The acquisition of BioWare and Pandemic Studios was announced in October 2007 and finalized in January 2008 for 860 million dollars, with 620 million paid in cash. At the time, then-CEO John Riccitiello defended the purchase as a strategy to enhance quality and creative output, promising a "city-state" model that would preserve the unique identities and management independence of the acquired studios.

Despite these promises of autonomy, the reality for the acquired teams proved difficult. Pandemic Studios was closed in November 2009, just two years after the acquisition, following the cancellation of a Batman project and poor commercial performance of titles like The Saboteur. Founders Josh Resnick and Andrew Goldman departed during this period.

The closure of BioWare nearly 17 years after Pandemic's dissolution highlights the failure of the previously proposed management model to ensure long-term survival. While Riccitiello once emphasized that human talent was the true value of these acquisitions, the recent restructuring has effectively ended the operations of both studios.
