Key information
A significant security vulnerability in the PHP programming language has forced Square Enix to suspend login servers for Final Fantasy 14. Starting October 21, this emergency maintenance left many players unable to access the game for approximately 18 hours.
The outage poses a threat to the game's gardening system, where player-grown crops require regular watering to survive. This is particularly concerning for valuable items like Thavnarian Onions, which involve complex cross-breeding and a five-day growth cycle.
In response, active players who retained access have organized a volunteer service to tend to the gardens of those locked out. Through community initiatives like a Reddit post titled "PHP Watering Service," players share their house ward and plot locations so others can water their crops.
Because the game does not utilize instanced housing, these volunteers can visit other players' plots without needing special permissions. Square Enix indicated that it expects to restore login functionality later today.
