A Reddit user known as vgalz successfully returned a lost Steam Deck OLED to its original owner after the device was discovered on an Amtrak train. The redditor's mother-in-law initially found the handheld console several months ago but did not know how to operate it, eventually passing it to vgalz during a visit.

The recovery process involved multiple attempts to locate the owner, including searching various subreddits and contacting Steam Support. Although Steam Support could not facilitate direct contact, they advised reporting the item to local law enforcement. Vgalz also attempted to identify the owner by logging into the device and checking social media posts.

The owner was eventually identified through a Reddit post made nine months prior. After verifying the owner's identity, vgalz shipped the device back in a hand soap box. The redditor expressed satisfaction in completing the good deed, noting that another user rewarded their efforts with a gifted game.

During the nine-month period the device was missing, the market price for Steam Deck OLED models increased significantly. The 512 GB model rose from $549 to $789, while the 1 TB model increased from $649 to $949, potentially intensifying the impact of the loss for the original owner.
