Thirty years after Lara Croft first appeared in 1996, Crystal Dynamics is developing Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis for PlayStation 5. The project aims to modernize the iconic adventurer using advanced technology while strictly preserving her original visual essence and core identity.
Designers are utilizing modern tools to enhance realism, such as creating natural hair through polygonal planes and using subsurface scattering to replicate skin translucency. To achieve authentic clothing textures, the team scanned real garments crafted by a tailor and placed on 3D-printed mannequins, allowing for accurate representation of materials like denim, silk, and wool.
Aleksandra Skiba of Flying Wild Hog notes the challenge of improving detail without losing recognizable traits. Narrative director John Stafford emphasizes that while the team is adding emotional depth and leveraging Unreal engine technology for expressive facial animations, they are committed to maintaining Lara's established intelligence, fearlessness, and insatiable curiosity.
The game is scheduled for release on February 12, 2027. Players can currently pre-order the title via the PlayStation Store to prepare for this new entry in the long-running franchise.
