Thirty years after the original 1996 release, Crystal Dynamics is launching Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis. This new title aims to synthesize three decades of the franchise into a single experience, continuing the series' long-standing connection to PlayStation by arriving on PlayStation 5.

The development team utilized modern computing power to enhance character fidelity while maintaining the iconic 1996 silhouette. Technical advancements include hair cards for realistic movement and subsurface scattering to provide skin with a natural, lifelike appearance. Furthermore, the team implemented custom blend shapes to enable thousands of expressive facial animations.

To achieve authentic clothing textures, developers employed a scanning pipeline that involved 3D printing a base body and dressing it in real-world garments. For one specific outfit, the studio hired a tailor to create physical clothing, which was then scanned to produce a digital asset that accurately reflects how different materials like denim or silk fold.

Narrative Director John Stafford emphasizes that while the technology has evolved, Lara’s core identity remains unchanged. The game seeks to unify the mythic and grounded tones of previous eras, ensuring she retains her intelligence, fearlessness, and curiosity. Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis is scheduled for release on February 12, 2027, with pre-orders currently available on the PlayStation Store.
