Atari has announced the retirement of its Linux-based VCS console, which originally launched in mid-2021. The company plans to shut down its official software store on February 1, 2027, with the final date for adding new software to libraries set for January 31, 2027.
To mitigate the impact of this shutdown, Atari intends to release an operating system update that removes reliance on company infrastructure for authentication. This update will allow users to migrate all functionality to their local machines, effectively ending official platform support once the transition is complete.
The company is also introducing an Atari Homebrew App for all users. This tool is designed to enable independent game development and allow the community to continue adding new software to the hardware after the official store closes.
In a 2021 review, Tom's Hardware criticized the $399 console for its poor responsiveness, noisy fan, and clunky PC mode. The reviewer concluded that consumers would be better served by purchasing a budget mini PC or Raspberry Pi, noting that even in 2026, superior hardware alternatives remain available for under $400.
