Capcom, the publisher behind franchises like Street Fighter and Resident Evil, recently disclosed a significant data breach involving its Capcom ID service. The company detected suspicious activity on October 19th, prompting an immediate response to contain the security incident.

The breach compromised the email addresses and system-specific identifiers of 11,774,247 accounts. Additionally, 43 accounts had personal details accessed, including dates of birth, gender, country, and nicknames. Capcom confirmed that no credit card information was exposed during the unauthorized access.

While the company stated that customer-set passwords remain uncompromised, 196 accounts experienced unauthorized password changes. These specific passwords have since been reset. Capcom has officially reported the incident to the Osaka Prefectural Police and Japan’s Personal Information Protection Commission.

Capcom warned that the exposed email addresses could be targeted by phishing attempts impersonating the company. Users are advised to exercise caution regarding suspicious communications and to avoid clicking links or opening attachments from unknown sources. The company is currently conducting a detailed investigation to prevent future occurrences.
