Electronic Arts has announced the closure of BioWare and a reduction of 400 total roles across the company. While the publisher initially confirmed the impact on BioWare's 50 employees, it did not specify the origins of the remaining 350 job cuts.
Reports citing anonymous sources and LinkedIn activity indicate that layoffs have extended to several other studios, including Maxis, EA Motive, Full Circle, and Ripple Effect. Specific staff departures have been confirmed by employees such as Maxis senior director Anna Huerta and EA Motive senior gameplay designer Jamieson Shearer.
Operational shifts accompany these cuts, with EA pausing the unannounced Sims project Project Lotus to prioritize Project Evergreen. Additionally, the company is downsizing Full Circle to focus on long-term player engagement. Despite previous commitments to invest heavily in Respawn for Apex Legends and upcoming action-adventure titles, the studio is also facing staff reductions.
These layoffs follow EA's $55bn acquisition by a consortium including Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, Silver Lake, and Affinity Partners. Following the deal, EA informed debt investors of plans to reduce annual costs by $700m, including $170m specifically targeted at organizational efficiencies.
