The organisers of the Australian independent games showcase Parallels have rejected accusations of prejudice after refunding and delisting sponsor Wren Brier. Brier, the creative director at Witch Beam, stated she was removed after an anonymous speaker accused her of being a "zionist." This accusation reportedly stemmed from the inclusion of her game, Unpacking, in a list of Jewish-made titles published by The Jewish Independent.

Brier, who was born in Israel but emigrated to Australia at 18, denies identifying as a Zionist. She noted that Unpacking contains cultural items like a menorah, which she believes prompted the association. Freeplay informed Brier that her presence created an untenable environment for speakers, a decision that led to the resignation of at least two board members.

The Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI) paused its support for Freeplay, citing a breach of the Melbourne International Games Week code of conduct regarding discrimination. Freeplay’s board issued a statement rejecting claims of prejudice, explaining they acted under time pressure to ensure the event proceeded. They also reported receiving violent threats.

Freeplay expressed regret regarding the process and the resulting community upset. While they acknowledged public allegations, they stated they would not comment on private communications. The organization intends to seek further discussions with affected parties to address the situation moving forward.
