Developer Kevin Lai has announced that the cooperative horror title Whispering Ruins is scheduled for a Steam release in the first quarter of 2027. The project has garnered industry recognition, securing nominations for Best Art at the 2027 Indie Game Award and Best Design at the 2026 indiePlay competition.
The game features an isometric perspective, a design choice intended to accommodate players who suffer from 3D motion sickness. Supporting one to six players, the gameplay involves exploring cursed ruins to recover artifacts while meeting guild performance quotas. Players must navigate environmental hazards, utilize hiding spots, and manage the unpredictable negative effects of cursed items, which can transform characters or impact teammates.
The developer emphasizes that the isometric view shifts the horror experience away from jump scares. Instead, the perspective allows players to observe approaching threats and the gradual loss of control as teammates succumb to curses or panic, creating a distinct atmosphere of tension.
A free demo is currently available for download as part of the October Steam Next Fest. Progress made during this trial period will carry over to the full version. The game currently supports six languages, including Traditional Chinese, Simplified Chinese, English, Japanese, Korean, and Brazilian Portuguese.
