Electronic Arts has officially announced the closure of BioWare, the studio responsible for iconic franchises including Dragon Age, Mass Effect, and Neverwinter Nights. This decision includes the cancellation of early development on the next Mass Effect title and is accompanied by approximately 400 layoffs.
Internal communications from EA executives Cam Weber and David Tinson acknowledged BioWare as a legendary studio that helped define the role-playing genre. While the company stated the decision was not taken lightly, it remains unclear if EA explored options to sell the studio or its intellectual properties before opting to shut down operations.
Larian CEO Swen Vincke expressed disbelief at the news, noting that BioWare was instrumental in popularizing the RPG genre. Vincke lamented that the industry is entering an era where the BioWare name will no longer be associated with upcoming projects, describing the closure as a significant loss for the gaming community.
Industry observers suggest the closure follows the commercial performance of Dragon Age: The Veilguard. While Amazon's planned Mass Effect television series is reportedly still proceeding, the studio's shutdown follows reports of financial pressures at EA, including debt obligations following a $55 billion buyout involving stakeholders such as Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund.
