Key information

Following the closure of BioWare by EA, details have emerged regarding the cancelled fifth entry in the Mass Effect series. Former staff members have begun sharing insights into the project, which will no longer reach players as originally envisioned by its developers.

Cinematic supervisor Tony de Waal stated that the team intended to deliver a level of autonomy and choice unmatched by other titles. The developers aimed to elevate the Mass Effect franchise while remaining faithful to the original trilogy, drawing inspiration from the recent RPG offerings of Larian and CD Projekt.

While writers Catherynne M. Valente and Derek Künsken expressed excitement for the project's direction, the game remained in early development. The cancellation prevents the studio from testing whether their vision could have advanced the genre in the same manner as Baldur's Gate 3 or Cyberpunk 2077.

The studio's recent history included the mixed reception of Mass Effect: Andromeda and the struggles of Anthem. Dragon Age: The Veilguard, described as a compelling action adventure rather than a traditional RPG, failed to meet EA's sales expectations, contributing to the decision to shut down the veteran developer.
